Sabino Workshops
Sometimes the most valuable gift we can give ourselves is a break from the pressures of daily life, long enough to get back in touch with what matters: our own health and serenity. Regardless of whether you’ve tried weekly therapy, meditation, or another form of mental health treatment, you may have come to the conclusion you need something different. To strengthen your mental health, sometimes you must change your therapeutic environment and remove yourself from everyday distractions.
Time To Retreat To Victory
At Sabino Recovery, we specialize in private, intensive therapy retreats that offer significant results in days, not years. Our retreats combine recent advances in neuroscience and attachment research with experiential therapies, enabling us to work with underlying core issues and get right to the heart of the problem so that symptoms are significantly reduced or eliminated altogether.
We offer a five-day intensive trauma workshop that includes lodging on 150 acres of the Santa Catalina Mountains located within the Sonoran Desert. This concentrated format allows participants to focus on healing, while the landscape offers rock climbing, desert hiking, mountain biking, and bird watching.

More About Trauma
While trauma affects everyone differently, one of the most common symptoms trauma survivors experience is feeling disconnected from the world around them. They find themselves unable to relate to their friends and family. This alienation can be so pervasive it can even lead people to feel separated from their own body and sense of self. Powerful feelings of loss and personal deficiency may spontaneously arise for no clear reason.
At Sabino Recovery, we know enduring recovery from trauma is possible. Symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, depression, and chronic stress are all treatable. We believe in allowing you to heal at your own speed with a flexible schedule. Pause, breathe, and listen. Respond to what your body and mind are saying. Relax and de-stress with the help and support of a like-minded group, all with a stunning landscape as a backdrop. Recharge your batteries with five days of spiritual and physical self-care. Sunrise practices, guided meditations, and eye-opening group sessions keep your days full and enjoyable. Receive compassionate support and encouragement from staff to help you become more self-aware and experience personal breakthroughs.
Why Take Advantage of an Intensive Treat?
When you feel trapped in a cycle of negative thoughts and self-doubt, significant intervention is sometimes required to change your direction in life. One-hour weekly in-person or online therapy sessions may take years to provide real relief and healing, but an intensive retreat can provide both in just days.
A single retreat day involves multiple sessions with our therapists. Our intensive schedule of therapy can accomplish in a day what would amount to two months or more of weekly therapy. The effects are substantially more impactful because of the continuity of the work. You have your therapists’ attention every day of the retreat, with plenty of time to explore and recharge as necessary. None of your time is wasted; every activity offers relaxation and personal progress.
Science-Based Methods
The foundation of our intensive treatment retreats is built upon understanding how trauma affects adult mental health. Our treatments are grounded in the latest scientific research. When it comes to treating mental health and providing therapy, we use the most up-to-date techniques to help you process your trauma and move forward with your life.
Our evidence-based strategies treat depression, anxiety, PTSD, sleep disorders, and a wide range of other emotional and psychological problems. Designed by state board-certified clinical trauma professionals, our program is built to provide real progress for trauma survivors and those struggling with mental health issues. For anyone searching for a retreat that is as relaxing as it is life-changing, Sabino Recovery’s five-day intensive workshops are in a category all their own.
Our Treatment Modalities
Here, we provide an overview of just some of the carefully selected cutting-edge treatment modalities we offer in our intensive workshops.
Psychodrama
Through the use of dramatic techniques, psychodrama gives our clients the tools to evolve their language and perspective. People benefit from psychodrama by learning to perceive themselves and their environment from a fresh angle. Using this sort of therapy, our clients are able to look for fresh answers to their current difficulties or reimagine the outcomes of challenges they have already encountered.
There are a series of stages that help the group feel comfortable with the process. During a warm-up phase, the group builds trust and unity with movement and activities. Then, a member of the group volunteers to be the protagonist of the psychodrama.
The protagonist, with the help of the therapist, creates a scenario based on major events occurring presently or from the subject’s history. The group’s members may be cast as the protagonist’s alter-egos or important people from their past. Role-playing or letting a scene play out as you wished it had occurred helps heal past traumas and lets you discover new ways of interacting with others. You will be able to deal physically and experientially with trauma (including childhood trauma) and other difficult experiences. Psychodrama is one of the most effective means of coping with and moving past the trauma that is stored in the body and mind.
Experimental Therapy
Trauma, eating disorders, behavior disorders, and addiction can all be treated through experiential therapy. In this type of treatment, participants combine physical or creative activities with mindful observations of their thoughts and feelings. With the guidance of a therapist, our clients can harness the grounding energy generated by performing a task with precision and focus to release their emotional baggage.
Therapies designed by highly qualified experts offer experiences that train emotional processing skills. The activities are designed to allow you to grow more confident in your life decisions and increase creativity. As you become more comfortable expressing your inner feelings, you can improve your relationships with others. This process liberates you to be who you truly are, helping you to reflect on your past experiences through new ones. Your therapist will help you examine the significance of your emotions by focusing on your awareness and impressions of what you are experiencing during these therapies, conversing with you individually or while you’re engaged in an activity to help make sense of the experience.
Equine Therapy
Therapists and professional counselors strive to develop relationships with their clients and provide a safe environment for clients to examine sensitive issues and process traumatic experiences. Still, inner feelings can be challenging to discuss; some experiences and emotions feel impossible to talk about. Equine therapy helps address this challenge by facilitating emotional rehabilitation nonverbally.
It’s no secret that horses are keen observers, always on the lookout for any signs of movement. They often imitate the behavior or emotions of their handler in order to show that they understand and care about the person. In turn, this helps clients feel safe.
There is a feeling of peace and natural beauty inherent in the experience of working with horses. Without bias or judgment of the client’s emotional experience, they respond to behaviors and feelings with grounded energy. Using the horse’s behavior and interactions as a kind of feedback helps participants develop a sense of self-awareness, as they can monitor and comprehend what is going on in the present moment with often confusing feelings.
Through the lens of the emotional energy you emit, the horse is a point of reference for processing worries about painful events. The horse’s mirroring behavior allows clients to explore thoughts that are difficult to express. Equine therapy provides the safety and security needed to process emotions on a deeper level.
Breathwork
Breathwork involves more than simply concentrating on how you breathe. It is a potent stimulus for personal development and healing. By harnessing the power of breathing methods and exercises, this practice relieves physical, mental, and emotional stress.
Deep breathing, a crucial component of many meditation methods, produces direct health benefits. Inhaling and exhaling deeply relax the parasympathetic nervous system, lowering blood pressure and decreasing heart rate. When you utilize your diaphragm instead of your chest muscles to breathe, your neck and chest muscles relax. More oxygen reaches your cells and organs. Your mental stress and body tension melt away.
The body’s stress response may be reversed by practicing deep breathing to calm and slow down emotional turmoil. Breathwork may help decrease depression, anxiety, and PTSD symptoms.
As a spiritual practice, deep breathing helps center and focus the mind. Connect with your core spirit — beyond your body and intellect – as you engage in the practice. Reconnecting with all of creation is possible, particularly when explored with our dynamic natural terrain as a backdrop. Breathwork and meditation practitioners often report spiritual awakenings and a heightened sensitivity to their inner selves. If you’re looking for a peaceful place to practice meditation or breathwork, a retreat with Sabino Recovery is the answer.
Gestal Therapy
Focusing on the present rather than reaching back in time for solutions is a hallmark of Gestalt therapy. An essential element of recovery involves taking responsibility for one’s actions. This type of therapy is rooted in the belief that no one can be totally objective about their experience. Emotions from the past can stick with us and control our behavior long after the event that caused them has passed. With some self-reflection, we come to realize that our past experiences have a profound effect on who we are today. Professional counselors seek to establish an atmosphere in which clients may open up and share their feelings without fear of being judged.
Traumatic situations cause us to create walls or put things out of our minds, which is a natural response. However, even if this reaction may appear to be beneficial, compartmentalizing our sense of self and our experiences can give us more issues in the here and now.
Our methods of self-preservation that helped us survive in the past can become obstacles on our path to greater self-awareness and progress. Healing and personal progress are easier to achieve when you’re more aware of the obstacles in your way. Learning these additional skills can help improve relationships and even advance your professional development.
Art And Music Therapy
Making, viewing, and discussing art may help people deal with their emotions and gain a better understanding of who they are. Individuals might also express worries about their condition that might otherwise go unspoken. Art therapists use pictures, painting tools, visual symbols, and behavioral expertise to help people deal with their problems and internal struggles.
Art therapy allows you to process your feelings and experiences using materials to make paintings, drawings, sculptures, and other forms of art. Using art as a vehicle to communicate your feelings about traumatic events can be quite powerful. Creativity allows you to tap into your subconscious mind and use an artistic medium to communicate your thoughts and feelings. Art therapy may also involve looking at specifically selected works of art or photographs. Afterward, the therapist may ask you to reflect on your feelings. Art therapy breakthroughs can occur (even if you aren’t the best artist).
Music therapy is the practice of using music to aid healing and enhance well-being. It helps our clients cope with their conditions in terms of their emotional and physical health. Singing, chanting, and guided imagery can all be part of a music therapy session, as can listening to music and creating your own compositions and arrangements. Participants with musical skills may be encouraged to play instruments or sing if they’re comfortable doing so.
During music therapy sessions, we create a musical and emotional environment that motivates you to respond by revealing personal experiences and feelings. Both music and spoken word may be practiced during a session. Alternatively, the therapist might use music and guided meditation to help you relax.
