What is Somatic Experiencing?

Somatic experiencing (SE) is a form of somatic therapy that focuses on the central nervous system and its responses to stress and trauma. Utilizing a combination of psychotherapy and physical therapies, this approach aims to help individuals overcome the physical and emotional symptoms of trauma by addressing the body’s sensations and feelings.

SE uses somatic techniques to help individuals release tension stored in their bodies. A licensed therapist guides you through this process, helping you become more aware of your body’s sensations and emotions. By doing so, you can learn to regulate your nervous system and reduce symptoms of anxiety, depression, and other mental health conditions.

Somatic Experiencing can benefit individuals struggling with a range of mental health conditions, including but not limited to:

  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder
  • Panic disorder
  • Substance abuse
  • Eating disorders

SE can be an effective treatment option for those looking for a non-invasive and holistic approach to healing and improving mental health.

How Does Trauma Relate to Addiction and Mental Health?

Past trauma is a common underlying factor in many addiction cases. When you have a traumatic experience, it can trigger physical symptoms and emotional distress that can be difficult to cope with. To manage this distress, you may turn to unhealthy coping mechanisms, including  substances. This can lead to addiction as your brain becomes dependent on the substance to regulate your emotions and alleviate the physical symptoms.

Benefits of Somatic Therapy for Recovery

Somatic therapies can help many individuals who are in addiction recovery or in mental health treatment. SE can help you manage chronic pain, increase self-awareness, help you identify triggers, stay in the present moment, and develop new coping strategies that don’t involve substance abuse.

Some additional benefits of SE for addiction recovery include:

  • Trauma resolution
  • Stress reduction
  • Emotional regulation
  • Improved self-regulation
  • Enhanced body-mind connection
  • Greater resilience
  • Improved interpersonal relationships
  • Holistic healing
  • Long-term recovery support

SE can help you heal from the inside out, addressing the root causes of illness and helping you develop the skills you need to stay sober in the long term. By improving your body-mind connection and developing greater self-awareness, SE can help you develop a more holistic approach to recovery.
