Is Addiction Impacting Your Life?
Take The First Step To True Healing Today!
What is Narrative Therapy?
Narrative therapy, developed by David Epston in the 1980s, is an innovative approach to treating addiction that focuses on the stories you have constructed about yourself, your beliefs, and your behaviors. As a part of cognitive behavioral therapy, this modality helps you reframe your self-image and self-esteem by identifying alternative narratives within the broader context of your life.
At its core, the narrative therapy approach challenges the idea that there is only one correct story about your addiction or other struggles. Therapists using narrative therapy guide you in finding “unique outcomes” or moments in your life when you acted differently from your presumed narrative. These unique outcomes help you understand that your identity is not solely defined by addiction.
Narrative therapy offers you the opportunity to better understand the relationship between your actions and the contexts in which you face challenges. By doing so, you can reshape your self-image, self-esteem, and actions in a more positive and empowering direction.
The Narrative Therapy Process
The narrative therapy process focuses on identifying and separating yourself from the negative stories that have become a part of your life. As you embark on this journey, your therapist will utilize various techniques and exercises to help you create a new, healthier story.
In the beginning, therapists work with you to identify the dominant problematic story. By doing so, they help you to understand the underlying beliefs and emotions that drive your behavior. This awareness is crucial for developing strategies to transform your narrative.
The next step involves creating a space for alternative stories to emerge. Through carefully designed exercises, you’ll begin to develop a new story that reflects your strengths, values, and aspirations. This process empowers you to take control of your life and establish a renewed sense of self.
Throughout this therapeutic journey, the focus remains on your unique experience. By constantly adapting the techniques used, therapists ensure that the therapeutic process is tailored to your specific needs, leading to lasting and meaningful change in your life.

Principles of Narrative Therapy
- Reality is socially constructed: In narrative therapy, we believe that your experiences and understanding of the world are shaped through social interactions and cultural norms rather than a fixed, objective truth.
- Reality is influenced by language: The words you use to describe your experiences and beliefs play a vital role in shaping your perception of reality. By addressing the language used to convey your story, changes in perspective can be achieved.
- Narrative helps organize our reality: Human beings inherently make sense of their lives by constructing narratives and weaving stories. These stories influence how you view yourself and your relationships with others.
- Objective reality doesn’t exist: Narrative therapy acknowledges that there is no single, objective reality. Instead, it embraces multiple perspectives and the subjectivity of experiences.
By incorporating these principles, therapists can help you identify and challenge problematic stories to build a healthier sense of self and promote lasting recovery from addiction.

The program at Sabino Recovery works! I emerged from an accumulation of unrecognized emotions, issues of trust, and unresolved grief and loss. 35-days of effective integration of customized quality therapy reconnected my mind, body, spirit, and I am worth it! I had masked emotions and hurtful events for decades with alcohol. At Sabino Recovery I safely focused deep within to unleash harmful secrets and self-degradation. Tools of recovery were practiced, not just presented. Integrative therapies were tailored to my circumstances, thus were effective. This residential program is like no other. For me, Sabino Recovery delivered what was professed. I am forever grateful for this gift of healing.

It was great to begin my recovery in a group environment with so many knowledgeable nurses, therapists, BHT’s, and others around for support. The equine therapy, challenge course, family week, and daily therapies all work together seamlessly, allowing me to leave Sabino as a healthier and stronger person!
