What is Trauma from Narcissistic Abuse?
At Sabino Recovery, we recognize that narcissistic abuse affects not only the mind but also the nervous system. The brain’s fight-or-flight response becomes overactive, making it difficult to regulate emotions and trust oneself or others. This is why healing the brain is the basis of our entire healing approach here at Sabino Recovery. Our trauma-informed care provides the tools needed to restore balance and a sense of inner peace.

What is a Narcissist?
- Grandiose sense of self-importance
- Need for excessive admiration
- Lack of empathy
- Troubled relationships
How Long Does It Take to Heal From Narcissistic Abuse?
Here are some factors that influence the healing process:
- Duration and Intensity of Abuse: The longer and more severe the abuse, the more extensive the healing process tends to be.
- Individual Resilience: Each person’s capacity to cope with trauma varies. Pre-existing support systems, coping mechanisms, and personal resilience play a significant role.
- Access to Support: Professional guidance can help individuals process trauma, rebuild self-esteem, and develop healthy coping strategies.
- Type of Relationship: Healing from abuse by a parent or long-term partner may take longer than recovering from a shorter-term relationship.
- Self-Awareness and Acceptance: Recognizing and accepting the reality of the abuse is a crucial step.

Therapy for Narcissistic Abuse Trauma
This powerful technique helps access and release deep-seated trauma stored in the brain and body. By guiding the client’s gaze to specific eye positions, Brainspotting taps into the brain’s natural ability to process unresolved emotional pain. This method allows traumatic memories and emotions to surface in a safe and controlled environment, leading to profound emotional release and healing. It is particularly effective for those who feel stuck in their trauma and are unable to move forward through traditional talk therapy alone.
EMDR therapy is a well-researched, structured approach to trauma therapy that helps individuals reprocess traumatic memories, reducing their emotional intensity. By using bilateral stimulation—such as guided eye movements—EMDR allows clients to access distressing memories and reframe them in a way that lessens their negative impact. This method is especially helpful for those struggling with intrusive thoughts, flashbacks, and emotional triggers resulting from narcissistic abuse.
Designed specifically for addressing attachment wounds and complex trauma, NARM focuses on reconnecting individuals with their authentic selves. This therapy helps clients explore patterns of self-sabotage and emotional dysregulation that stem from early relational trauma, including narcissistic abuse. By fostering self-compassion and resilience, NARM enables survivors to develop a healthier sense of self, break free from unhealthy relational dynamics, and create a life rooted in self-worth and empowerment.
Trauma from narcissistic abuse doesn’t just affect the mind—it disrupts the nervous system, leading to chronic stress and dysregulation. Neuropathy and somatic healing techniques focus on restoring balance through body-centered practices, such as breathwork, movement therapy, and mindfulness. These approaches help release stored trauma from the nervous system, promoting emotional stability, physical relaxation, and an overall sense of well-being. By integrating these methods, we help clients regain control over their bodies and emotions, fostering long-term healing.
These therapies, combined with a nurturing environment, help our clients rediscover their strength and move forward with clarity and confidence.

The program at Sabino Recovery works! I emerged from an accumulation of unrecognized emotions, issues of trust, and unresolved grief and loss. 35-days of effective integration of customized quality therapy reconnected my mind, body, spirit, and I am worth it! I had masked emotions and hurtful events for decades with alcohol. At Sabino Recovery I safely focused deep within to unleash harmful secrets and self-degradation. Tools of recovery were practiced, not just presented. Integrative therapies were tailored to my circumstances, thus were effective. This residential program is like no other. For me, Sabino Recovery delivered what was professed. I am forever grateful for this gift of healing.

Narcissistic Abuse Trauma & Mental Health
Our mental health treatment program at Sabino Recovery is designed to support mental health recovery by addressing trauma at its core. Through a combination of therapy, mindfulness practices, and a compassionate community, we help our clients regain control over their emotions and develop a strong sense of self-worth.

Narcissistic Abuse and PTSD
Survivors of narcissistic abuse frequently exhibit symptoms of PTSD or C-PTSD, such as flashbacks and intrusive memories, hypervigilance and anxiety, emotional dysregulation, difficulty with relationships, and negative self-perception. While PTSD and C-PTSD are highly prevalent among survivors, determining if they are the most common mental health disorders caused by narcissistic abuse is complex. This form of abuse can also lead to other mental health conditions, including anxiety disorders, depression, personality disorders, and co-dependency. It is common for individuals to experience a combination of these disorders following narcissistic abuse. Additionally, C-PTSD is not officially recognized in the DSM-5 but is included in the ICD-11, making it challenging to obtain accurate statistics on its prevalence.
