Why I do what I do
Through my own personal recovery doors opened that led me to this field of work and a life I believed was lost. I choose to do this every day because I want to provide the same opportunity to others.
Ryan’s career in treatment began in 2014 as an Admissions Coordinator for a small substance abuse facility in Orange County, CA. In 2016 he took a position as a Treatment Placement Specialist (TPS) in Phoenix, AZ, providing informed treatment guidance to individuals and providers looking for various treatment options at all levels of care. As a TPS he developed relationships with professionals throughout Phoenix and Northern Arizona, connecting those seeking treatment to personally vetted providers that best fit the individual needs of the people he worked with. Ryan first visited Sabino Recovery at the end of 2019 and immediately knew it was a special place. Although he wasn’t looking for a change, Ryan left Sabino that day knowing he had to be a part of what was going on there. Two months later, he and his wife relocated to Tucson where Ryan became Admissions Director in January of 2020.

Kendall works with a wide variety of clients experiencing symptoms of trauma, dissociation, grief, loss, death, substance use, eating disorders, depression, anxiety, and identity challenges. Randy Rutherford LASAC | Primary Therapist
I grew up in Southwest New Mexico on a cattle ranch just outside Silver City. I spent my youth working on the ranch and competing in the Rodeo. I was a State High School champion team roper and went to college at Central Arizona College in Casa Grande Az on a full ride rodeo scholarship and qualified for the National College Rodeo Finals 2 consecutive years in 3 events. I also worked extensively as an electrical lineman throughout NM for around 15 years prior to getting sober in 2014, wherein I did an about face and decided to return to school and pursue a career in counseling.
I feel that to the untrained eye, addiction can look like a lack of willpower or weakness, and I want to help the client understand the problem as well as the solution and help them develop an escape plan long before the world closes in on them. I also believe that addiction is typically not the primary problem, but usually an attempt to solve a problem, so understanding the underlying issues that are typically rooted in trauma provides for a more complete recovery with less likelihood of relapse. I offer unique insight due to my experience and proven track record of helping literally thousands of individuals over a 9-year period, begin their journey of recovery. I offer time-tested, effective methods and I think having a solid rapport with the client is imperative. Former clients have indicated that I’m a great therapist, “but not too therapisty!”
I know on a personal level the misery of addiction and historically I was reluctant to speak with therapists because I felt they could not possibly understand what I was going through. I finally crossed paths with some therapists that were actually in recovery and spoke openly about it I can honestly say they probably saved my life!

Stacey has experience as a mental health and high-performance coach where he helped clients create practical plans to live better by making daily and sustainable deposits into the psychological, physical, social, and spiritual areas of their lives. He has helped clients overcome mental health illnesses such as depression, anxiety, and addictive disorders, and has worked with many populations such as children, the elderly, families, couples, and groups. From his own experiences, Stacey can advocate for issues such as depression, anxiety, suicidal ideation, addiction, family struggles, and many other sensitive topics.

Pat Thurman LPC-S, LPAT, LMHC, CSAT, ATRS | Clinical Therapist
My venture into the world of mental health starting when I was 16. My friend volunteered us to be members of the “Teen Hot Line”, a program where troubled youths could get one on one support with other people of similar age. Although we did good work, there was so many tragedies we also experienced. I believe these early experiences distended me to become a psychotherapist and art therapist in later life.
I am now working as an addiction and trauma therapist at Sabina Recovery Center. The path to becoming a therapist was not linear by any means. Prior to becoming a counselor, I work for many years as an environmental attorney and prior to that as a mechanical engineer.
Educationally, I have a bachelor’s in business administration and mechanical engineering. I have a master’s in environmental engineering as well as a JD and an LL.M. in intellectual property with a focus on art law. I also have a master’s in counseling and art therapy. I am a licensed professional counselor, licensed professional art therapist, a certified sex addiction therapist and a registered board-certified art therapist.
As an addiction and trauma therapist I am a certified sex addiction therapist and I have also obtained training in sex therapy. In seeking addiction recovery, to move into a more harmonious way of being, it is not always the case to simply stop a challenging behavior and then be done with it. Without examining what a more balanced sense of self might entail, life challenges will continue, hence my training is sex therapy as an augment to working with sex addiction.

Scott Hillsman | Acupuncturist, Traditional Asian Medicine & Qi Gong Practitioner
Why I do what I do
“Every day I choose to believe in the possibility of transformation. I use the word ‘transformation’ because fundamentally I see every act of healing as a catalyst for change. This is the goal – like the ancient alchemical metaphor of turning lead into gold. I am inspired to bring ancient and alternative healing strategies to my clients, because I have seen the power within these medicines. I am always grateful to work with the residents at Sabino, and be present for them during their journeys here.”
For over a decade, Scott has studied healing arts with the goal of bringing awareness and healing to humanity. He practices a robust set of tools for physical, emotional, and mental wellbeing.
Through studying Qi Gong and martial arts, Scott came into contact with numerous healers, where he observed first-hand the power of traditional Asian medicine. During a career crisis, he decided to commit fully to holistic healing as a full-time vocation. He enrolled in ASAOM in Tucson, where he earned his Masters’ Degree in both acupuncture and Oriental Medicine.
Scott originates from the town of Catalina Arizona, just North of Tucson.
